6 steps for building an online presence

In a time where business transactions take place primarily online, having an established, representative online presence is key. If you or your small business are looking to grow your online presence, you’ve come to the right place.

What is online presence?

First things first: If you’re looking to create an online presence, you’ve got to know exactly what it is. An online presence is your business or personal website’s digital storefront for your online audience, whether that audience be customers, followers or website/application users. The result of a strong online presence is the digital equivalent of seeing a store on the side of the road and deciding to pull over and stop in – only this time, the “road” is a search engine (likely Google) and the “stopping in” is a click. 

So, now that you know what online presence is, how can you achieve it? 

Try following these 6 steps to increase online presence: 

1. Articulate online brand identity 

The first step is simple: Your audience won’t click if you don’t have personality. Spend some time working on your business’ brand identity and talk about how you will translate that online. Consider enlisting an ad agency or online presence professionals to help you (hint, hint: we know a guy).

2. Define the digital face of your business 

Have you ever gone into a store and been greeted by an overly-eager salesperson ready to hound you about what you’re looking for? If so, did you walk back out? On the digital side of things, you may have experienced this same feeling because of an aggressively persistent chat bot. While you may think it’s helpful, we’ll clue you in: People don’t generally like it. If you want to offer support, make that an option, but don’t let the face of your business be a robot who is ever present in a negative way. 

3. Communicate your “why” 

It is important to write website copy that describes the “how” and “why” of your organization. We recommend starting with the why. Tell your audience why you created your company, product or website and don’t hold back on your description – remember, content is king. Then, describe how your business will achieve the audience’s goals or solve their problem. This is the beginning of an online sale. 

4. State the call to action 

Once you’ve captured your online audience’s attention, tell them what you want them to do! Can they buy something? Read more? Learn about the product or service in greater detail? They won’t stay if you don’t give them a reason to. Define that reason. 

5. Continue the conversation

After completing the call to action, this potential audience member has become your business’ official supporter. In order to keep them engaged, you must continue the dialog you brought them into. In order to do this, you can send newsletters after capturing their email, engage with them via social media, follow up with additional products they may like or write educational content that will continue the cycle you’ve successfully started.
